~ ROWAN~ antique created ruby ring

This beautiful ring holds an approximately 10 x 8 mm created ruby. The stone is large and so vibrant, with only the slightest age related wear to facets.
The ring face spread top to bottom is about 16 mm. So it’s quite substantial. 
She’s in 9k deep yellow gold, and a ring size about a 7.75 - 8. Ring weighs about 3 grams. 
The bezel is slightly worn with age, but holds the stone very securely without any movement. 
A lot of red gems from this time are paste, which is basically glass. And don’t get me wrong, some paste pieces are even more valuable than real gemstone pieces; having said that it’s very cool to have a large antique created ruby like this in the shop. 
Rubies were grown from the late 1800’s onwards, and the way you can tell it’s a synthetic ruby rather than paste, is if it glows under UV light (which this stone does!)
It’s the chromium that gives rubies their glow, while the iron found in natural rubies dulls the glow. Synthetic rubies have little to no iron and therefore glow very brightly.
This is your reminder that all antique pieces are sold on an ‘AS FOUND’ basis. They are old, and must be worn with more care than you would something new.
